What to do when you find out that your coworker is making more money than you

What to do when you find out that your coworker is making mora money than youWhat to do when you find out that your coworker is making more money than youWhen we find out that our coworker is making more than us for the same role that we have, it can upend our worlds and transform the workplace into a battleground. How could he be making more than me? Why her and not me? Suddenly, the workplace can seem like an unfair world where you cannot succeed on your merits alone.Heres how to handle your reaction and subsequent potential actions with grace, so that you can hopefully get the raise you ask for or the peace of mind you seek1) Dont act on your initial emotionsWhen you find out youre being underpaid, it can make you feel undervalued. In this demoralizing state of mind, you may act on your feelings of inadequacy and do something rash like angrily confront your boss or coworker directly about the pay gap.Career experts advise you to resist that first impulse, and remain calm. Dont fli p out. If you want to raise the issue with your manager, youll need to master those hurt feelings, so you can talk rationally about your situation. As part of this internal reckoning, psychology and marketing professor Art Markman suggestsit helps to understand that it can be muster in thriving economies for salaries to not be equal. Markman told one underpaid employee to understand that its actually quite common where people hired after you may end up making more money. While there is always the chance that this is related to gender, it may also reflect market forces. If you do not think the pay discrepancy is fair, even accounting for outside factors like market forces, it may be time to move forward on potential actions.2) Gather information about your salaryAfter youve mastered your feelings, its time to do research so you go into your pay discussions armed with data about how much your role is worth. Figure out if youre actually being underpaid by researching the salary ranges an d market value of your role through publicly available forums like Glassdoor and Payscale.Karen Dillon, co-author of How Will You Measure Your Life?, even suggests going to human resources regarding your roles salary range. Dont accuse and dont be presumptuous, she advises. Instead, ask specific questions about your roles salary range and the companys ability to give raises. If you find out youre in a lower pay bracket, and youre a high performer, the onus is on HR to explain it to youin the name of transparency, she said.If your research gives you reason to believe you are being discriminated against, it may be time to go outside of the office and consult a lawyer about potential legal action. As Dana Wilkie warned employers for Society for Human Resource Management, When workers in seemingly identical jobs are paid differently, the employer leaves itself open to claims that the motivation for the different pay is discriminatory - particularly if the person on the lower end of the pay scale is a member of a protected class. U.S. federal law prohibits discriminationbased on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.3) Focus the conversation on your value, not the coworker making moreWhen you bring up the pay gap with your manager, do not directly bring up your coworker who is making more than you as the only reason you suddenly deserve a raise. As Money magazine, notes, using someone else as your benchmark for success can be seen as unprofessional Even if youre lucky enough not to work for one of the companies that implicitly or explicitly discourages salary discussions, its not professional to bring up what someone else makes for comparison. You can, however, bring up the pay gap directly without naming names. It has come to my attention that others make much more for doing the same job, is a script Dillon suggests employees can use to alert a boss about a pay discrepancy without revealing your sources and taking the pay discussion off track.Instead of talk ing about your coworker, talk about the unique value you bring to the table through projects you have led, goals you have surpassed or skills you have mastered in your role. The goal is to focus the conversation on your specific accomplishments so that when you ask for a raise, it feels merited.4) Ask about other forms of compensationIf your conversation about a pay raise goes nowhere, considering asking for compensation in other forms like extra vacation days or remote work possibilities.5) Process your companys answer and move onIf your negotiations are successful, congratulations But if your talks went nowhere, dont despair.Even if your requests get turned down, you can at least have the peace of mind that you have been proactive about improving your situation.Recognize that how your employer decides your roles worth is an answer in itself. If you still feel like your employer does not properly value you, it may be time to find a new one that does.

Provided that I can convince Bechtel to let me out of the house more often for conferences, Ill definitely do more. This has been awesome, said Sarah Haight, a mechanical engineer from Boise, Idaho. Its such a great chance to meet ASME folks that I would never otherwise get to know.Indeed, the support of ASME staff led by LTC Managers Marian Heller and Ty Booker of the Engineering Research and Technology Development (ERTD) Community and Services sub-department and Jimmy Le of Events Management ensured LTC 2013 ran smoothly. Next year, LTC will be on hiatus while volunteers and staff create online materials and other resources and consider future directions for the conference. Additionally, ERTD is coordinating a series of mini-LTCs around the world, co-located with district operating board meetings, to provide international members with access to the world class training, networking and professional opportunities that are the hallmark of LTC. A Transfer at Work Is a Career Opportunity

A Transfer at Work Is a Career Opportunity A Transfer at Work Is a Career Opportunity A transfer at work is an approach to helping employees develop a career path. A transfer provides experience in other areas of an employees current department or in a new department within the business. A work transfer is a way to help an employee gain wider and broader experience within the business. It is more often available than a promotion because fewer employees inhabit each successive layer as they are promoted up the organization chart. A transfer will not generally result in a higher salary, although it can especially if the transfer is a promotion or if the other employees doing the same job make more money than the transferring employee. As managers look for ways to help employees continue to develop their skills, experience, and knowledge about the business, a transfer is an option to consider. When working with a performance development planning (PDP) process, along with promotions, a transfer provides an opportunity for an employee to learn and grow. Thus, it is motivating for employees. A transfer to a different job at work is a sign that the organization cares about and will provide opportunities for the employees development, one of the five factors that employees want to obtain from work. In fact, research from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) indicates that career development is a huge part of what helps employers retain their most superior employees. So, if youre serious about retention, a job transfer is another opportunity that you can provide for career-savvy employees.   Advantages A transfer provides a career path for an employee when a promotion is not available. It provides advantages for an employee. In a transfer, the employee: Gains new knowledge and skills by performing a different job that requires new skills and provides different responsibilities.Overcomes boredom and dissatisfaction with his or her current job by having a new and different job with changed responsibilities and tasks.Receives a new challenge, a chance for the employee to expand his or her accomplishments, reach, impact, and potentially, influence different aspects of the workplace and organization.Experience a change of scene and work environment which challenges the employee to adapt and learn to manage change. (Increases the employees ability to deal with ambiguity.) Will learn about different components, activities, and jobs in the organization and how work is accomplished in different departments or job functions. (This will build his or her organizational knowledge and ability to get things done. It will also increase the value that she provides to the organization.)Prepares for a promotion or broader organizational role, by expanding his or her skill set and responsibilities, and gain broader knowledge about the total organization.Gains visibility with a new group of coworkers and managers. Visibility for a good employee brings potential opportunities. The more people who understand the value that she brings to the organization- the better. Allows the employee to accomplish all of the above while retaining his or her current salary, benefits package, and company perks. A job change to achieve these same benefits might result in the loss of needed and appreciated compensation, benefits, and time-off options such as the number of weeks of vacation available. Downsides Its tempting to say that there are no downsides when an employee transfers to a new job, but that isnt true in all cases. So, lets consider the potential downsides while celebrating the above positives. This is going to sound as if the flip side of each positive is a potential downside  but consider these potential negatives in an employee job transfer. The employee has to learn a whole new job. When an employee has been comfortably and happily performing in their current position, this change can require a lot of energy investment, learning, and adjustment. The employee needs to develop a new network of customers and coworkers with whom he can successfully work. The new network has different ways of accomplishing work and getting things done. He will need to learn their way of doing business and adjust his behavior to the whole new network of relationships. A new boss may or may not work effectively with the transferred employee. There are bad bosses out there and what if he is one of them? In the former position, the employee had learned to work with the boss he had. In any case, a new boss requires an adjustment. What if the employee doesnt like the job, the work or his coworkers? He must succeed or he will likely be ineligible for additional transfers and promotions. Alternatively, he can leave the company. The employee will need to work hard, work longer hours, and more to prove that he deserved the new position and that the organization gave the right person the opportunity. For the employer, the major downside is that the employee will not produce as successfully until he or she learns the new job. The employer will also have to replace the employee with another employee. To counter these concerns, consider that a good employee who has been successful in the past will learn quickly to contribute to the new position. If the employer has worked to develop succession planning, the employer has the right employee waiting to take the transferring employees job. Please note that the word transfer is often used interchangeably with the term, lateral move, although a transfer can also involve a promotion whereas a lateral move does not. As such, in the business world, though, the employer would likely call the move a promotion.

9 Ways to Leave Your Job on the Right Note - The Muse

9 Ways to Leave Your Job on the Right Note - The Muse 9 Ways to Leave Your Job on the Right Note After finally getting the courage to tell your boss that you quit, it’s tempting to spend the next two weeks doing, um, nothing. While that plan sounds tempting, it’ll only cause you more stress later down the road- and it could also (very easily) burn bridges with your co-workers. To ensure you get great future references and make lasting connections with everyone you work with, plan to help your employer tie up loose ends so you can leave the same way you arrived- on a high note. Nine entrepreneurs from Young Entrepreneur Council provide some suggestions based on their own experiences managing employees who quit. 1. Transfer Your Knowledge It’s tough- you never know everything an employee knows and does until they are gone. A good transition involves good knowledge transfer: training a replacement or documenting all the little things that aren’t part of the job description. One of the best things an employee can do when transitioning to a new opportunity is ensure his or her former employer is set up for continued success. Jeremy Brandt, WeBuyHouses.com 2. Make Yourself Available After You Leave Chances are you won’t find a replacement before the employee leaves for good. And no matter how detailed he or she is in explaining the job’s role and responsibilities for the next person, there will be questions. The best thing an employee can do is offer to be available by phone or email when possible, or make time on a weekend to train their successor. Compensated for his or her time, of course. Brooke Bergman, Allied Business Network Inc. 3. Ask All Questions Before You Leave I wish all transiting employees would resolve all their issues (and issues they anticipate having!) before they actually leave. Once an employee departs, the company is fully focused on the future. Taking others off-task with unfinished business (“I forgot to input XYZ into the system,” “I have a question about my COBRA,” or “I moved and didn’t update my address”) is a huge time suck for management. Kim Kaupe, ZinePak 4. Give a Little More Than Two Weeks This isn’t always possible, but I love when an employee leaves and gives a little bit more time than two weeks. The more advance notice somebody can give, the better. I had an employee that stayed until we found a replacement, and then stayed on to train that person for a few days. This really made the process a lot easier on myself and the staff and ensured that he truly left on a positive note. Cassie Petrey, Crowd Surf 5. Update Your Handbook For each role in our company, we have a handbook, a shared Google doc that outlines in great detail how employees carry out their roles. It’s more than a how-to guide. In fact, the handbook aims to answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how for the position. For future employees, being able to read about the strategy and how to execute on it certainly helps with any transition. David Ciccarelli, Voices.com 6. Give an Employee Referral Referrals have become an effective and frequently used method for finding new qualified candidates. Before employees leave, it would be appreciated if they could refer a few great individuals for the role they are leaving, so that we are not left searching for the right employee. They could sift through their peers or past co-workers to find a great new fit for their position. Miles Jennings, Recruiter.com 7. Get Involved in the Hiring Process No one understands the finer details of the job better than the person who actually does it. Bringing your employees into the hiring process will help provide you and your hiring managers with some new insights into what candidate can best fill their shoes. Phil Laboon, Eyeflow Internet Marketing 8. Leave With Grace and Integrity Why burn bridges? In today’s interconnected world, it’s immature and unprofessional to leave on bad terms. Maintain positive relationships and take with you the lessons learned from your experience. Exit like a champ- with grace and integrity. Stephen Ufford, Trulioo 9. Give an Honest Exit Interview An employee leaving is an opportunity to learn more about which process worked well and which didn’t. One thing that is helpful upon exit is an honest interview that creates an open dialog about seamlessly transitioning. Brandon Weber, Hightower Photo of man on bike courtesy of Shutterstock.

What to do when your new boss is younger than you

What to do when your new boss is younger than you What to do when your new boss is younger than you In most industries, age is much like the college you went to - a considerable factor but not a deal breaker. Armed with a robust resume that speaks for itself, many employers are less concerned about the exact number of years you’ve been out of college and more persuaded by your experience and the fruits of your labors. In fact, it’s a trend that continues to shift according executive coach and leadership development expert, Liz Bentley, especially since younger generations are usually more adaptable and can advance quickly, thanks to their advanced technological skill set.“They are able to pivot easily and adjust to the changing work environment. Their lack of time in the workplace sometimes works to their benefit because they have not seen things fail, ‘remember a time when,’ or be stuck in a ‘this is how it’s done’ mindset,” Bentley says. “They are fresh and see challenges as exciting problem solving scenarios. They also have the stamina to work longer hours an d accomplish a lot in shorter periods of time.”That being said, when you’re eying a promotion and a younger associate is given the gig over you, it can be tough to take. Or, when an outside professional is recruited for the management opportunity you thought you were a shoo-in for, you might struggle to be respectful toward your new boss. Here, a guide to how to keep your cool, manage your expectations and excel in your position when your superior is a few - or many! - years shy of your birth year:Recognize they were hired for a reasonThe hard truth is that executives never have to share their reasoning for hiring one applicant over another. And while you might not always fully comprehend their choices, if you admire their intelligence and expertise, industrial-organizational psychology practitioner and workplace expert, Amy Cooper Hakim, Ph.D. says to remind yourself they hired based on who they thought would perform at the best in the role. “Even though you have a lot of te nure and related experience, the executives within your organization made this hiring choice. What might you learn from your boss that might help you to better complete your job or interact with customers?,” she challenges.Let it go - fastExcuse our direct approach, but first and foremost, you have to get over it. Though you might complain to your trusted confidants outside of the office over happy hour drinks, any sort of complaining, gossiping, or dramatic reactions at work will reflect poorly on your character, according to Bentley. “You need to treat them like any other boss. They are the ticket to your future in the organization and you need to work with them and make them happy,” she says. This might mean biting your tongue (or gnawing on the inside of your cheek) for a few months until you acquainted, but it’s worth the snacking to defend your reputation.Be respectful to earn respectIt’s not enough to act mature, according to former Navy SEAL, author and entreprene ur, Brent Gleeson. Much like the dynamics of the military, to be respected, you must bestow respect upwards and downwards on the corporate ladder. The more effort you put into not only acknowledging their presence, but actively working to brainstorm, welcome, and rub elbows with your new younger manager, the more they will value you as their employee. “As the older subordinate, you must always show respect to your boss. Respect and sincerity always go a long way. Especially, if you may need a letter of recommendation someday,” Glesson notes.Seek common groundOne way to build repertoire and a harmonious working environment is to eagerly ask questions about your new manager. Even if you’re struggling to accept that they are too young to know any of the music you jammed out to in college, chances are high you at least share a similar interest or hobby. As Hakim says, a manager with a fresh take can also teach you valuable skills to advance your own resume. As you put yourself out there and get to know and understand your boss, your rapport will improve and so will your office environment. Who knows, you might even forget their age once you grow to like them!Demonstrate your super skillsThough you’re minding your manners and swallowing your ego (you got this!), Bentley says you shouldn’t hide your own successes. Since the average age of retirement continues to increase, more-seasoned generations are working further into their golden years, offering a much-needed balance to the workforce. “We need all types in the workforce for diversity,” Bentley explains. “Older generations bring a maturity that helps with people issues, emotional intelligence and calm. They provide much needed wisdom.”Hakim encourages further developing your backbone by - accurately and professionally - stating your opinions. “Don’t hide what you know. Just because you are uncomfortable that this person is your boss, don’t just accept every idea or instruction. Graceful ly interject your opinions when you feel that your experience and tenure might help to move the team forward,” she explains. “Remember that this boss will likely impact your next lateral move or future raise.”

Daydreaming may be the missing ingredient in your success

Daydreaming may be the missing ingredient in your success Daydreaming may be the missing ingredient in your success Looking out  my office window, I’ll stare  at the boats moving slowly against the water, thinking about how I’m going to write this story. I’m visualizing myself crossing a finish line where accolades and friends await me, cheering the results. I indulge in that fantasy because it lets my mind escape the blank page before me and inhabit  a fantasy world of personal success.I digress. What had me thinking about all this is a new study on daydreaming that says letting your mind wander can be a  positive activity that can spark new ideas and help you think through problems.Daydreaming makes us more controlled in our everyday livesUniversity of North Carolina Greensboro psychologist Michael Kane found this out by observing the daydreams of  274 undergraduates at UNC-Greensboro.For a week, Kane’s researchers asked these college students about their daydreams in a lab setting and outside of it. They were testing the contents of our daydreams and if they affected our ability to exec utive function, or remember things despite distractions. The researchers found that in the controlled lab setting, the students who were “zoning out” were more neurotic. But out in the real world, these college daydreamers showed better executive functioning skills and were able to focus when the context called for it. Moreover,  outside of the lab setting, the researchers found that daydreamers who let their mind wander in their daily lives were more open to different experiences. That sounds vague, but it’s a secret skill that predicts someone’s future: openness to experience has been shown to be the strongest personality predictor of creative success.A wandering mind helps one’s mindfulness too. Daniel Goleman’s book  Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence  has also linked daydreaming to positive self-reflection and the ability to incubate new ideas without judgment. Here’s how to do this healthilyWe’re all daydreamers. A 2010  study found  that almost half of us do i t.But daydreaming has long been a stigmatized activity. Think of the words associated with it like airhead, ditz and flake. Or think of stories like Amélie or The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, in which daydreaming is seen as a fanciful and ridiculous distraction from participating in the real world. German even has a word for the daydreamer who always has his head in the clouds and can’t be relied on for practical purposes: the luftmensch.Author Scott Barry Kaufman calls this “poor attention control daydreaming,” which means the daydreamer cannot focus on “either the external environment or an ongoing train of thought.” There’s also a kind of daydreaming in which we picture catastrophic or high-stress scenarios; needless to say, you don’t want to do that kind. But Kaufman says we should strive for “positive-constructive daydreaming,” which means showing an “openness to experience” that reflects a drive to “explore ideas, imagination, feelings, and sensations.â €To get that kind of daydream - and its attendant success - think of the daydream as  â€œautobiographical planning,” Kaufman has said.Specifically, picture “the setting and anticipation of personally relevant future goals and mental simulation of possible future scenarios, including the emotional reactions of others and ourselves in response to the imagined events.” (Yes, much like my dreams of glory upon finishing this article). So raise a glass to the airheads. Under the right contexts, leaving your head in the clouds  is a way to healthily explore the success you could one day be. Just remember to put it into action.
